ACADEMIC EVALUATION SYSTEM

At Dayalbagh Educational Institute (DEI), the Continuous Evaluation System is the cornerstone of our pedagogical philosophy. This learner-centric model shifts the focus from rote memorization and high-stakes final exams to consistent academic engagement and progressive development throughout the semester.

Core Philosophy and Structure

The assessment system is designed to promote critical thinking and comprehensive understanding through innovative methods such as Open Book Evaluations.

  • Credit-Based Flexibility: Programs are structured around unique course codes (e.g., ABC 123). Students earn mandated credits per semester within the stipulated flexibility, with an optional 4-credit summer term available for accelerated learning or for making up on lost credits as feasible.
  • Assessment Weightage: To ensure consistent performance, 75% of the total grade is derived from continuous internal assessments, while the remaining 25% is determined by the end-semester or end-module examination.

Components of Continuous Evaluation
Student progress is monitored through diverse periodic assessments tailored to the nature of the course:

Theory Courses Practical Courses
(i) Class Tests (i) Record-cum-Home Assignments
(ii) Daily Home Assignments (ii) Practical Tests
(iii) Additional Assignments (iii) Viva-voce
(iv) Seminars & Group Discussions (iv) Attendance
(v) Attendance (v) End-Semester/Module Examination
(vi) End-Semester/Module Examination

Credit and Grading System
The Institute follows a credit-based evaluation system. Credits are assigned to each course proportional to the expected student engagement.

  • Composite Grade: Separate grades are awarded for continuous evaluation (75%) and end-semester evaluation (25%), which are then combined.
  • Grading Scale: Performance is graded on an 11-point scale as follows:

  • Minimum Passing Grade: A student must achieve at least a D- in an individual course to pass.
  • Performance Metrics: Academic standing is measured via SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). SGPA is calculated using following formula.

SGPA=Σ(Grade Point×Course Credit)

                   ΣCourse Credits

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) reflects overall academic performance across all semesters and is computed similarly. The equivalent percentage can be derived by multiplying CGPA by 10.

Award of Division

Upon completion of the program, divisions are awarded based on the following CGPA benchmarks:

  • First Division with Distinction: CGPA of 8.5 or higher.
  • First Division: CGPA of 6.0 or higher.
  • Second Division: CGPA of 4.5 or higher.

Remedial Examination Policy

  • Eligibility for Remedial:
    • UG Programs (First three years): Students failing in up to two courses in a semester.
    • 4th Year Honours & PG Programs: Students failing in up to one course in a semester.
  • Procedure: Remedial examinations are conducted after the semester results are declared. Students must undergo remedial training before appearing.
  • Continuation: Progression to the next semester is permitted only if the student is not declared "Fail" in the preceding semester.
  • Grade Cap in Remedials: The highest grade achievable in a remedial examination is D.
  • Re-registration: Failure beyond the permissible limits, or failure after remedial, requires re-registration for the entire semester(s) in the subsequent academic session. A second instance of such failure results in discontinuation from the program.
  • For progression from an odd semester to the corresponding even semester, successful completion (i.e., passing) of the odd semester is a prerequisite. Accordingly, if a student fails to clear the odd semester, he/she shall not be permitted to progress to the even semester and must repeat the odd semester in the next succeeding session. However, if a student has passed the concerned odd semester but fails in the even semester, he/she shall be required to repeat the failed even semester in the next succeeding session. During such repetition, he/she shall not be permitted to enrol in or appear for the subsequent odd semester in the next academic year in lieu of the already passed odd semester.

Rules for Modular Programs

  • Module Completion: Failure in any course within a module result in an unsuccessful module. However, students may proceed to the next module.
  • Certification: A module completion certificate is issued upon passing all its courses. The final program degree/diploma is awarded only after successful completion of all modules.

Maximum Duration for Program Completion

  • A student is permitted to remain enrolled for a maximum period of twice the minimum duration prescribed for the program. This duration includes any periods of failure or breaks in study.
